Like I needed another obsession

Oh my.

Cloth diapers. It's a whole 'nother world. Wow.

In our family's quest to lighten our footprint on the world, so to speak and to use a totally environmental phrase, I've really been looking for ways to reduce, reuse & recycle. (Man, I'm just full of the environmental catch-phrases today. You'd think I was running on the democratic ticket or something.) We've been looking into both wind & solar power for the farm. We've also been looking at plans for a dry composting toilet...don't worry...if you visit us, you'll still have the option of flushing your deposits away. And, we've been trying to switch to cloth or reusable things in most areas...cleaning rags, dish rags, napkins, etc. So, it makes sense that I'd check out cloth diapers for this little one who loves to kick!

There are about 3 billion options for cloth diapering. I mentioned this to Don's mom & she had no idea that they had moved beyond the enormous piece of cloth that you folded into the size you needed, attached with pins & covered with rubber pants. Man, oh man. Have times changed. And lest you think cloth diapers amount to the 1 pack of 6 pieces of cloth that Gerber makes and sells at the big box stores, peruse some of these sites...

Cotton Babies
Better for Babies
Natural Babies
Sugar Plum Baby
Mother Ease
Wildflower Diapers

See? I told you. And that's just a handful. Cloth diapers come in just about any fabric from fleece to hemp, wool to silk. They come in an array of colors and patterns. They come in velcro, aplix, snaps, "snappis", and yes, even pins. They have organic and unbleached and just about anything else you could desire. They only thing these aren't is disposable. Yet, some of them? You'd have a hard time telling the difference but for the cloth.

And, so, for the last week or so, I've been trying to decipher the lingo and make heads or tails of the whole thing. I've figured out my order & am just about to submit it. I'll post a picture of the glorious mound of diapers that I receive when they come. I really am very excited. Who knew I could get this excited about diapers. But, it's just so much more fun than picking up a pack of Pampers at the store.

I love your blog! Cloth diapers, pins, and rubber pants? Yep, I used them on my kids and there's nothing wrong with them. A little practice with folding, a little with the pinning, and it becomes just as easy as using any other kind of diapers out there today.
