My, but they sure do grow up fast

I was looking through old photos the other day and came across this one. This was Burt and Annabelle when they first came to our farm in May. Burt was just 2 days old.

And this is him today. (He's the one with the horns and the purple halter.) Can you believe the difference? He is nearly the same size as his mama.

Burt is still quite sure that we are nothing but trouble. Though he's curious and will come near, if he senses the slightest interest in him or the slightest movement toward him, he's gone. Which is good. It has made it hard to become too attached to the guy (unlike the goat wethers, who were supposed to be meat and not pets). We intend to let Burt impregnate Annabelle this fall (as distasteful as that sounds, it is quite natural in the animal world...siblings are a no-no, but mother/son couplings are just fine) and then he'll be off to the meat locker. That will give him all spring and summer to consume great quantities of grass and turn that grass into even more meat. Keep growing, Burt!

Oh, my, they do grow fast. We hope to have a milk cow and steer next year.
