Christmas bags

Here is a little something I'm currently working on. They are Christmas gift bags. In an effort to reduce the amount of waste we generate, I had this idea of making cloth bags for our gifts. That way, we can reuse them every year and we don't have a trashbag full of wrapping paper at the end of the day. I hate the phrase "going green", but I suppose that's what I'm doing.
Anyway, the bag is really easy to make. I just finish the edges that will be the top open part by folding over twice & stitching. Then, I face the insides together & stitch around, leaving the top open, of course. Turn right side out, iron it out, and add a ribbon, which I stitch on about 2 inches from the top (leaving room to gather it together & tie). It takes about 10 minutes once you have the fabric cut out. Here is what it looks like.
And here is a bag stuffed with a gift & tied up.
I love the look of them & it makes me feel better to not waste all that paper. Besides, I have tons of Christmas fabric that was desperate for purpose.

I love these!

I am hoping I get a sewing machine for Christmas this year.

I'll have to save this idea for next year.

BTW I found you from the SL blog ring

I love this idea! Thanks! I think I may do some of these.

If you take gifts to other houses, like I will to my in-laws, do you bring the bags back home?

Joyce,
I still have lots of leftover wrapping paper, so I was going to use that on gifts I need to send. I did wrap the inlaws' gifts in cloth bags since they will be here for Christmas & I'll just keep them. I guess you'd have tp determine 2 things:
1. Do you have a type of relationship where it would not be awkward to ask for them back?
or 2. Do you want to just make them a part of the gift?
If no to both of those, wrap 'em in paper!

I've been doing this for about 4 or 5 years now! My bags are still going strong. I've also made them for my siblings and my parents! Now everyone just knows the bag gets returned to the giver and it's like a reflex to hand the bag back. :)
Not only is it earth friendly, but it's so EASY to wrap. I finished ALL of my wrapping in less than 2 hours! My bags are a bit different in that I serged all of my edges rather than finishing them.
Here's a pic of some of my bags:

Oh, and NOW is the time to get fabric. All of the Christmas stuff is on sale!

What a fun idea! I'm weary of the 'going green' phrase too, but I'm all for practical and frugal! :) Thanks a bunch!
