December Egg Tally

Oh boy, I totally forgot to post this! Of course, it could've had something to do with the fact that I didn't post much of anything for several weeks there, but for my own records, I wanted to be sure to get caught up.

  2. 8 eggs
  3. 11 eggs
  4. 14 eggs
  5. 10 eggs

  22. 12 eggs
  23. 9 eggs
  24. 13 eggs
  25. 9 eggs
  26. 14 eggs
  27. 16 eggs
  28. 12 eggs
  29. 19 eggs
  30. 19 eggs
  31. 24 eggs
Total:401 eggs (33 dozen plus another 5 eggs)

All is well on the chicken front. We had some sub-zero temperatures for a while and lost a few birds, but things seem to be back to normal. And production seems to ramping up, though that makes no sense at all. Our green-egg layers have been giving us a few double-yolkers, which has been nice, but again, confusing. Oh well, if they want to lay well, I won't complain!

I was just curious...do you use artificial lighting for your birds in winter, or are they laying like that naturally? Also, roughly how many birds do you have at this point, to get that amount of eggs?

No, we don't use artificial lighting. When we first started out, we committed to trying to keep our animals in a way that mimics as closely as possible their natural/wild cycles and feed. We like the idea that God gave them a natural break from their frantic summer-time egg laying during the winter...time to recoup and rest (just like what we get!) We do, however, have a heat lamp in there that is on a thermostatically controlled outlet...but it is a red lamp and so doesn't disrupt their environment.

It's been a while since we've tried to count the birds. My best guess is that we are down to about 30 now. I will point out that on the occasional day that we get something like 27 eggs, what has probably happened was that a hen was nesting when we last gathered eggs and so those eggs didn't get taken in and so they get gathered the next day. This is especially true if the previous day is 7, as it was on days 11 and 12.

Ahhh...I forgot about that! I'll get the rest of the data entered and try to get that up soon. Thanks for reminding me!
