Meet me at the Fair

After 3 straight days of hanging out at the county fair, I'm all faired out. If I have to pay way too much for another morsel of food of questionable origin, I'll most likely let out a little scream.

Don't get me wrong, though. We had a great time. Caleb is completely sold on joining 4-H for next year and spent the entire time coming up with winning entries. Don and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how things were working. In fact, we were completely baffled when the auction started and the auctioneer commented that, of course, you would not actually get the animal you bid on and that no transfer of title would take place. Why people were bidding hundreds of dollars on animals they wouldn't get was really stumping us. Of course, we've since figured out the whole "premium sale" and when I explained it to Caleb, he was even more encouraged to get something in the fair next year.

We did let the kids ride one ride, but at $3 a pop, that was the extent of our time on the midway. That, my friends, is highway robbery. I simply do not understand how anybody is affording to ride the rides. Maybe the 4-Hers were blowing their premium checks on the Whizzer. Who knows.

After finishing our delectable dinner Sunday evening, I went to the trash can with some cash in one hand and trash in the other. I caught myself mid-throw in the act of tossing my money in the trash. But see, what I figured was this: Throw the money away now...or later. What's the difference, really?

I do have to say that the highlight of the whole weekend fair activities was Saturday night when Don and Caleb got to play "donkey polo". Yes, that does consist of riding a donkey bareback while trying to whack a beachball with a stick. That was quite a sight. If only I had remembered the camera.

OK, is there a simple explanation of the "premium sale".

I love the fair, but i'm with you on the craziness of the prices to go on rides. Charley and I will typically do the ferris wheel and call it good... rest of the time we just walk around and look through the various exhibits. Oh, and he always has to see the lumberjack show and the demolition derby. haha boys will be boys! I love mine!! :)
