Rosie is the scrawny little kitten who showed up shortly after we moved in. She was practically skin and bones and had a nasty case of diarrhea. We were not confident that she'd make it. In fact, I wouldn't allow the kids to name her I was so convinced she wouldn't be around long. I'm happy to say, however, that I was wrong. She has plumped up nicely. Part of that is due to Chief Wahoo's strong hunting instinct and her willingness to share. We also set out cat food for them, though as good as Chief is at hunting, I can't imagine they'll need much in the spring and summer. So, anyway, Meagan named her...after Samwise's love interest in Lord of the Rings.
Rosie has fit in nicely on the farm. She isn't much of a hunter, though. She prefers to hunt bugs over mice, so pickings have been slim in this cold weather. She's only caught one mouse that we know of and that was because we found the mouse, put Rosie on top of it, and cheered her on.
Rosie spends her days just hanging out and waiting for us to come and play. On really cold days and every night, she tucks herself in under either a hen or a heat lamp in the coop. Surprisingly, the chickens leave her pretty much alone. At night, about half of the hens huddle up in a big pile in the coop and we often find Rosie right smack-dab in the middle of the heap, happy as a cat could be.
